When winter hits, there is no better way to get hyped on snowboarding than watching all the latest films and web series.… take a big cinema, all the film crews, free popcorn and some good drinking sessions… you get yourself something called THE REELS snowboard film festival, presented by Monster Energy.
Back for only its second year, it was held in Annecy, France again. Totalling around 30 films for your viewing pleasure, a screen in the Decavision cinema got taken over to play all of these over the course of three days. Friday night saw the Golden Reels Ceremony, awarding all of this year films and riders with various titles from Best Jib Section to Best Movie.
The judges this year included Eddie Wall, Peter Line, David Benedek, Nico Droz and Ingemar Backman. After the hosts, Dingo and Danny Kass, invited the judges on stage the crowd were given an insight to the judging process…
A few stand out films for us this year was firstly, the déjà vu crew. This production has been eagerly awaited, featuring all of the Canadian heavy hitters. Nic Sauve, Louif Paradis, Frank April, Ben Bilocq, Phil Jacques, Will Lavigne, LNP and Alex Cantin. Everyone killed it in movie, the level of riding is insane… a couple of stand out parts are Frank’s (sick song choice too) along with Louif’s which in turn deservedly got him the Best Jib Segment award.
Another film, which blew us away, was the new Videograss movie, The Last Ones. With a big presence of online webisodes and short clips, the name of this movie is paying homage to those still out making full length feature films… and we are glad this crew are. Sexton’s got opener and it’s hammer after hammer. Scott Stevens as always will blow your mind with so many tricks you wouldn’t think are possible… in turn Scott received the Coup De Coeur Du Jury award (in other words, the judges favourite) and in the words of David Benedek “We gave this to someone who we just want to watch again and again”. VG also saw another crew member, Justin Fronius, take Best Newcomer award for his amazing section. It was good to see one of the slightly lesser known from the crew put out a part like that and claim the ender section.
A shout has to also go to the Pirates, for their new movie ‘Distorted Reality’. The cinematography is mind blowing and the work that has gone into each of the riders intros is definitely worth a special mention. Also… just look out for Elias Elhardt fronside 180, I will say no more than it got one of the loudest cheers of the day.
And lastly… out very own Grindhouse crew, this year’s film is up a gear and ‘Mind Games’ was nominated for Best AM Movie. However, the award was not to be ours as the Postland Theory crew very deservedly took the trophy for their new film ‘Periscoping’.
THE REELS is a event that is so good for snowboarding. It brings a large like minded crew together to celebrate everyone’s hard work from the previous season… and delivers one of the best formats to hang with your bros and watch ALL of the new movies. The only issues about this weekend however is you will leave wanted to go shred and you will leave skint with a 3 day hangover…
