Winter is coming. It really is. It’s so close we can almost smell it. With less than 100 days to go until some of our favourite resorts open and officially kick-start winter 2017, it’s safe to say we’re feeling more than a little excited.
After a long, boring summer we’re counting down the days until the mountains turn white and we can finally get our shred on. If you’re as stoked as we are, then start the season as you mean to go on and party hard at one of the words best season opening parties. Hotzone Park Opening. Hintertux – 30 Septempber – 3 October
Drop everything and get packing! With only a couple of weeks to wait, Hintertux is the first of our European season openers. Opening its Betterpark in style, Hintertux brings us its famous tried and tested sessions; ‘Alarm Clock Battle’ on Friday, ‘Session of the Dudes’ on Saturday and the ‘Cash for Trix’ on Sunday. Groms events, free testing, skate sessions and tunes will keep you entertained during the day and then three nights of parties will keep you up all night! We recommend a day or two to recover after this one!
The Kaunertal Opening – 7-9 October
One of our all time favourite glacier resorts gets winter started early. We usually wave goodbye to the Season here at the annual Spring Break gathering but it’s also a pretty good place to welcome it in.
Now in its 31st year it’s one of the worlds longest running winter opening festivals, you can be sure Kaunertal knows how to throw a good party. Kicking off October 07th for a weekend of powder, pro comps, kit testing, BBQ’s and good vibes. Down in the valley the festival marquee plays host to what they’re calling ‘top international live acts and DJ’s. The Big Bang Snowboard Show – Tamworth Snowdome – 15-16 October
It’s back! Our favourite UK season starter party is making it a weekender! Two action packed days of snowboarding all under one roof and there’s something for everyone. Beginner taster lessons, snowboard coaching from Definition, Snowboard Coach and Mint Snowboarding, ride with Team GB, Burton Riglet Park, free hard wear demos, afternoon freestyle park and the Adidas Snowboard freestyle Jam. Stubai Premiere – Snowpark Opening – 22-23 October
Another early starter, two weeks after the Kaunertal opening its Stubai’s turn. Now in its eight year the Stubai Premiere celebrates the opening of the Stubai Zoo by transforming the glacier into a ‘Shredtopia’. Unlimited testing, comps and shredding by day and wild parties by night it’s an event not to be missed for some early season action. Kaprun / Zell am See – WOW Glacier Love – 04-06 Nov
Kaprun’s uniquely named WOW Glacier love festival marks the beginning of the winter season for Kaprun’s Kitzenhorn glacier. With both Kaprun and neighbouring Zell Am See geared up to put on a show, you won’t be disappointed. Massive light displays light up the picturesque lakeside town whilst an extensive live music program keeps the party going all night. Les 2 Alpes – Rise Festival – 10-17th Dec
If you love big festivals then check out Rise Festival. 3000 metres up and taking over the resort of Les 2 Alpes for 7 full days, it doesn’t get much bigger. With access to over 225km of terrain, pools, bars, shops, restaurants and après the days are as action packed as the nights when the resort comes alive. Festival arena’s, club takeovers, cabin shindigs and secret, invite only parties are scattered all over the resort. The full line up is yet to be released but past acts include: Sigma, High Contrast, So Solid Crew, Clean Bandit and B.Traits. 6 days lift pass with festival access starts at £199. Avoriaz –Transition Festival
Knowing a lot of the UK snowboarding community spend their winters in Morzine, we couldn’t not mention Transition Festival, which takes place in Avoriaz. Although they’ve kept pretty hush, hush so far about this year’s festival, we feel it’s only a short amount of time until they reveal all. Keep an eye on the page for all the details
