On a wet and cold Tuesday eveningback in November at Tamworth Snowdome, winter finally felt like it had arrived with the first Burton Grom Gathering, an event for kids aged15 and under. If they could link turns, they could come and ride, and ride they did

The format was for these kids to be able to get tips and learn tricks in a park made for progression and young riders of all levels, with support from UK Burton riders Ross Needham and Matt Higson designing the park and riding plus Burton global and European riders Marko ‘Grilo’ Grilc and Wojtek Pawlusiak flying in for the evening to help coach.

The night started with a meet and greet, signing session and high fives. A great way to break the ice and put some of the smaller kids at ease. It is not often you get the chance to sign the snowboard of a seasoned pro, and that is what Grilo had the kids doing with some perfecting their signatures for the first time. Then it was a private session for those kids that had signed up for the event and with 30 kids on the snow there was plenty of room for everyone to get around the features.

All abilities of riding were on show, from kids hitting boxes for the first time to a couple going upside down. It was clear to see that plenty could ride well already and for those guys, following Grilo into the transfer gap from the kicker to the bomb feature would have been the icing on the cake.

The Burton riders and staff were all on the slope shouting support, dragging kids over features or lining them up to hit something. There was a real feeling of camaraderie amongst everyone. Talking to many of the parents on the evening it was clear to see that most were looking for this kind of session. Some kids were riding on a ‘freestyle’ night for the first time after coming through their lessons and conquering a feature like the rainbow box really was a massive achievement

The night was capped off with lots of giveaways being thrown at the young riders with everyone walking away with some swag. But for one lucky young person as chosen by the team for being most impressive and progressive on the night, a trip to Morzine and to ride The Stash Avoriaz with Rude Chalets. That privilege went given to Koby Cook, congratulations to him…

Thanks to all the kids (and parents) that travelled far and wide to support the event. Many thanks to the Snowdome Tamworth for their support of kids snowboarding, TSA and Rude Chalets for the amazing prize.

The Grom Gathering will return…
